All pistons are made from aluminium, but high quality pistons, such as those made by Wiseco, use more complex manufacturing processes, better and stronger materials, incredibly intricate machining processes and sometimes coatings to help them survive and thrive in the unforgiving environment of a combustion chamber.
Starting from aerospace grade aluminium, the forging process compresses the molecules of the material, which increases the density of the aluminium and aligns the grain flow of the alloy, resulting in a high quality product that is resistant to impact, fatigue and has improved material properties such as ultimate strength and ductility, which is the ability of a material to stretch or move without breaking under tensile stress. For high performance racing applications (where increased power and compression can stress the components of a stock engine), it is vitally important.
